International Youth Forum

Day 1

My name is Olivia Sutton, I am eighteen years old and from Canberra. I was selected by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) to attend the 2015 International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum in Piestany, Slovakia.

The Youth Forum has been filled with laughter and we are creating lifetime memories and friendships with people from all aroudn the world. There are over 150 students participating in the Youth Forum, from 21 different countries across all 5 continents.

There are eight students representing Australia at this year's International Youth Forum (pictured above L-R) Harry Shaw (NSW), Connor van Dorsselaer (QLD), Jack Newman (NSW) Gracie Francis (SA), Micaela Maui (TAS), Kelsey Tranter (VIC), Emily Griffin (QLD) Olivia Sutton (ACT).

On the 30th of August the morning kicked off with sightseeing around the villages of Piestany and indulging in some well-deserved ice-cream whilst we adjust to the heat.

This was then followed by a tour to a cultural museum of Piestany where we were able to broaden our knowledge on Slovakia and Piestany's rich history.

We then shared lunch in groups which are made from members of different countries.

This was a fantastic opportunity to learn about each other's cultures, sporting and lifestyle endeavors.

After lunch all the participants went to the gymnasium to take part in some Paralympic sports and an exciting game of volleyball.

To conclude an action packed day, we all attended the opening ceremony which involved traditional dances, welcome messages from a number of Slovak officials and a disco to end the night. Helen Brownlee, AOC Vice President also addressed the students and honoured guests explaining the importance of Pierre de Coubertin.

All of the activities I have experienced so far has provided a wonderful opportunity to engage with people from different countries.

I am honored to be part of this wonderful experience and can't wait to see what the rest of the trip has to bring.
